Do you have a favorite quote that you return to again and again? What is it, and why does it move you?
I really do love this quote from Calvin Coolidge. I use it to try and motivate some of my students. I’d like to think that it’s been effective, but not everyone is motivated by the same things.
Why does it move and motivate me, though? Because it’s so true, that’s why! People tend to give up way too soon – myself included – and a lot of times, the only reason people aren’t successful is because they don’t have that persistence and determination. Some of my students think they have to be incredibly smart to pass particular classes. No, they just have to put in the hard work and dedication… and persist until the end.
When people have problems losing weight, what do they do? A lot of times they give up. They don’t try other methods, they just say “it’s too difficult” or “my body must be happy at this weight” or “I have a medical condition that makes it more difficult to lose weight.” So what? Just because it’s difficult or the weight isn’t coming off doesn’t mean that it never will. Persist. Try new things that you haven’t tried before.
So the next time you feel like giving up on X Y or Z, remember this quote. Maybe it will convince you to look at your situation from a different angle instead of giving in to defeat.
